General

What is NICU2HOME?

NICU2HOME is a smartphone app designed to support parents like you, with a baby in the NICU. NICU2HOME helps parents learn more about how to care for and bond with their baby, stay up to date with their baby’s care, track their baby’s milestones and connect with family and friends.

How do I sign up?

NICU2HOME is an invitation-only app. Please select “Request Invitation” at the homepage and complete the form. Each parent can sign up for an account, so add both parents’ information in the form if you want to have an individual account. Once receiving your request, we will send you an invitation email within 24 hours. Please make sure to check the spam folder of your email account if you don’t receive it until then. The invitation will contain the links to the App Store and Google Play from which you will download the app and information you need to enter when creating a new account.

What medical information about my baby can I see on NICU2HOME?

Only parents can view the medical information in the Daily Update and Team tabs. These features provide information about your baby’s weight, medications, feeding, breathing and more once every 24 hours, and real-time information about who is caring for your baby.

How does NICU2HOME get medical information about my baby?

NICU2HOME is securely linked to your baby’s electronic medical record –the place where your baby’s doctors, nurses, and other providers write down information about how your baby is doing.

Does the information on NICU2HOME replace my baby’s medical team or experience?

No! This app is not intended to replace medical advice in any way.

NICU2HOME can help you feel more informed, comfortable and confident -but your medical team members are the experts! Every baby is different and will have his/her own unique needs.

Where can I get information about how to care for and connect with my baby in the NICU?

NICU2HOME’s Education Center is your library of articles and videos. You can browse by category or search for topics that interest you. A selection of articles will be sent to your Home page each day to give you the information you need, when you need it most.

How can I invite my family and friends to NICU2HOME?

On the Home screen, select the menu at the top left corner. Select “Family and Friends,” then “+” to enter information about the person you wish to invite. Your family member or friend will receive an email invitation with instructions on how to join.

Can I contact the NICU directly through NICU2HOME?
 Yes! Select the large blue “+” at the bottom right corner of the Home screen, then select the yellow “Call” icon and you can call the NICU directly.
What are some other features of NICU2HOME?

You can also securely post updates and share photos with invited family and friends, keep track of your baby’s milestones, nominate special nurses for an award…and more!

Is the app secure? How do I know that my baby’s medical information remains private?
 NICU2HOME is securely linked with your baby’s electronic medical record, and great care is taken to keep your baby’s information private in accordance with all HIPAA laws. You must enter a unique security code from your invitation email to create your account and your login is password protected. All personal medical information is accessible to parents only.
What are the benefits and risks of using NICU2HOME?

Benefits may include learning more about how to care for and connect with your baby and feeling more informed and less anxious. Many parents report feeling more confident in their knowledge and parenting skills. There are no known risks at this time.

Troubleshooting

When I try to create an account, I am asked for the inviter email and a security code. What are these?

The inviter email and your secure unique 6-digit security code are both found in your invitation email, under “STEP 2: SIGN UP.”

When I create my account, I am asked to enter my baby’s MRN. What is this and where do I find it?

The MRN is your baby’s medical record number. Parents can find their baby’s MRN on their ID wristbands. Your baby’s nurse can also help you find it.

I have the app but am having trouble connecting or something else is not working as I expected—what should I try first to fix it?
 Like most technology, closing out of the app and restarting the app or phone will correct many of the common problems. In addition, check your WiFi strength as that differs by location. If the problem is not resolved feel free to contact nicu2home@northwestern.edu or ask your nurse.
